What is Mace Spice?

Mace or javitri is one of the most seductive and complex spices that is grown in Kerala. It is nutmeg's sister spice. The only plant that provides us with both nutmeg and mace is the nutmeg tree. The nutmeg tree produces nutmeg seeds, and the mace is the seed's protective coat. Additionally, nutmeg and mace have distinct flavors and aromas.
Mace's uses in cuisine
Mace spice is more often employed in savoury foods due to its strong taste. It's a spice used to enhance the flavor of pickles and chicken stock, as well as incorporated to continental meals like biryani. To add a unique flavor to your cappuccino or vanilla ice cream scoop, sprinkle some ground mace on top.
Mace's medicinal properties
In addition to adding flavor to food, mace provides a number of therapeutic benefits. Chemicals in it have an impact on the central nervous system. The spice can help reduce vomiting and nausea. It is administered orally to treat intestinal gas, spasms and pain in the stomach, and diarrhea. It is also beneficial for boosting hunger. Mace is used to treat kidney disorders and cancer. Moreover, mace is utilized topically to treat rheumatic joint discomfort. Mace is also useful in eliminating fungus and germs.
Experts advise against using large amounts of mace or javitri, particularly for expectant mothers. A hallucinogenic substance known as myristicin is found in mace. Consequently, it produces mental side effects and hallucinations. Nutmeg works similarly in the same way. Therefore, consuming mace in quantities greater than those contained in food is not recommended.
